What is Flicker in LED Lights?

Lamp flicker refers to the fluctuation of the luminous flux of an electric light source at a certain frequency and it will cause the phenomenon of light changing in brightness during use.

There may be various reasons for flickering of lighting fixtures, among which one common reason is the use of low-quality electronic components or unstable power supply.

1. Visible flicker

For the vast majority of people, light flickering below 80Hz can be detected, and the human eye can perceive changes in brightness. Flashing frequencies below 80Hz are also known as visible flickers.

2. Stroboscopic effect

For flickering above 80Hz, it is difficult for the human eye to detect, but it has a significant impact on the spatial perception of the human eye. For example, viewing a moving object as a series of stationary images, known as the Stroboscopic effect, which will create an illusion for people.

3. Phantom phenomenon

When the flickering frequency of the light source is between 80Hz and 2kHz, and the objects in the environment remain stationary, while the human eye is in a moving position or direction, the stationary light source will exhibit extended light points in the system, known as phantom phenomena, such as car taillights or scanning outdoor LED displays.

The Hazards of lamp flicker

A large number of studies have found that light source flicker is closely related to neurological diseases such as migraines, headaches, autism and visual fatigue.

1. The low-frequency flickering light sources of 3-70Hz may cause photosensitive epilepsy in some people.
2. The flicker frequency of 100Hz is considered to cause headaches and migraines.
3. For flickering light sources with a frequency of 120Hz, it may affect people's emotions, leading to boredom, anxiety, etc.
