2. Put a new bulb in the socket. To insert the new bulb into the socket of your lighting fixture, twist the bulb in a clockwise direction. Remember: counterclockwise to remove, clockwise to insert. The bulb will either lock into place or need to be slightly twisted until you can't twist it anymore, depending on the socket. Don't screw the bulb in too tightly or it may break. For a bayonet bulb, align the base of the bulb with the two pins, push down, then twist upward in a clockwise motion. For a screw-top bulb, place it into the hole, then twist. Choose a bulb with the same wattage as the old one unless you want a differently lit room.

Check the label on the bulb socket or fixture for the maximum wattage/ampere rating. Make sure the bulb is rated for no more than the lighting fixture allows (check with the manufacturer or packaging). Turn on the switch to know when to stop turning. Stop turning when the light comes on.

How to discard an old bulb

Discard the bulb safely. Note that light bulbs are fragile and should not be thrown in the trash at random as the broken pieces can cut someone. Wrap the old bulb in the packaging of the new bulb before throwing it away. Alternatively, you can wrap the old bulb in newspaper or old magazines.
